A key suspect in the mysterious disappearance of auxiliary nurse midwife Bhanwari Devi surrendered before a CBI court here on Saturday.

Shahbuddin, a resident of Pipad in Jodhpur, allegedly abducted Devi, 36, at the behest of sacked Rajasthan minister Mahipal Maderna. Shahbuddin has been remanded in CBI custody till October 24. Outside the court, Shahbuddin told reporters he did not know Maderna but had abducted Devi on Bishnoi’s orders.

Devi, who is suspected to have been murdered and her body burnt in a limestone kiln, allegedly possessed a sex CD of her with Maderna, who was sacked on October 16. She went missing on September 1 from Bilara when she went to meet Sohan Lal Bishnoi, a PHED contractor. Bishnoi has already been arrested. He had allegedly called Devi on the pretext of finding a buyer for a car she wanted to sell and introduced Shahbuddin as a buyer.
