RJD president and Railway Minister Lalu Prasad today hit back at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for claiming that Congress could not be blamed for Babri mosque demolition.
“Congress’s culpability is beyond doubt. It remained a mute spectator to the incident,” Lalu Prasad said while addressing a poll meeting at Narkatiaganj in Paschim Champaran Lok Sabha constituency, escalating the war of words with the Congress on Babri demolition issue.
“Apart from BJP leaders like L K Advani and Kalyan Singh, Congress government at Centre headed by P V Narsimha Rao cannot escape the culpability for the martyrdom of Babri mosque. When the mosque was being torn down, Narasimha Rao was the Prime Minister and he did nothing to prevent it,” Lalu said.
Earlier, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, while refuting Lalu’s charges said that Congress was also to be blamed for the demolition of Babri mosque, said in Guwahati that “the party’s only fault was to believe the assurance given by then UP Chief Minister Kalyan Singh to the Supreme Court on protecting the structure.”
“Kalyan Singh gave assurance to the Supreme Court (about protecting the mosque). The Congress party certainly can be blamed because it believed that he will honour his assurance. But he did not do it,” Singh told reporters.
