Demanding stringent action against BJP MP Babubhai Katara, who was caught trying to smuggle out a woman to Canada on his wife’s passport, the Left parties on Thursday asked the saffron party to do some soul-searching over why it had become a “refuge for venal and corrupt people”.
“The shocking and disgraceful act by the Lok Sabha MP reflects badly on his status as a Parliament member and his party should come to terms with the reality,” the CPI-M Politburo said in a statement. It recalled that earlier six MPs from the party were expelled from Parliament for their involvement in the cash for query scam.
The CPI Central Secretariat deplored that the MP’s conduct had brought disrepute to Parliament and the Indian democracy and demanded that the human trafficking angle in the case be thoroughly probed and strict action be initiated against Katara.
The CPI-M also condemned the attack on Star News television channel office in Mumbai and demanded the arrest of all those responsiblefor the act.
In a letter to Home Minister Shivraj Patil, party Politburo member Brinda Karat said a pattern was apparent where communal forces in different states, particularly where the BJP is in office, were trying to whip up communal passions in the name of security of Hindu girls.
