The Madhya Pradesh High Court on Wednesday deferred the hearing on a petition filed by Congress state chief Arun Yadav for Thursday. Yadav had filed a petition challenging the panchayat election schedule announced by the State Election Commission.
The petitioner's counsel Shekhar Sharma said voting for the first phase of the panchayat elections was held on January 13 and the counting would be held on January 16.
Voting for the second phase of panchayat elections will be held on January 31 next, he said. Since the counting will take place on January 16, results will be announced way ahead of the polling for the second phase.
This will definitely impact the voters and free and fair elections were not possible in such a situation, Sharma added.
