With 14 more people succumbing to waterborne diseases, including leptospirosis, the toll has risen to 142 in the metropolis while Maharashtra reported a total of 247 deaths so far, Health Department sources said.

The number of serious cases is reducing and there is a marked decrease in cases reported and admissions to hospitals in the city and surrounding areas, according to hospital sources.

In the last 24 hours ending 8 am on Tuesday, 874 people have been admitted to various hospitals in Mumbai with complaints of fever, Birhanmumbai Municipal Corporation health official Umesh Aijal said adding, many of them were discharged after treatment.

Meanwhile, an eight-member team from Defence Research Laboratory of Gwalior is coming here to proceed to Sangli and Kolhapur to assess the situation in the wake of spread of diseases like malaria and dengue there.

"Four experts have arrived today while four others would come here tomorrow to work in these two districts which require more attention now," Health Department sources said.
