Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said she would not contest the Lok Sabha elections, adding she was in Amethi to campaign for Rahul and Sonia “to spare them for electioneering in the rest of the country”. Umesh Raghuvanshi reports.
As the crowds shouted their preference, a smiling Priyanka Gandhi Vadra declared on Tuesday that she had no political ambitions.
She managed to do her job, though: Pull in the crowds.
She also made a pitch for baby brother Rahul, who will contest the polls from Amethi.
“Make sure he wins by an even bigger margin than the victory margin in Rae Bareli (Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s constituency),” she told the throng of party workers.
In town for the day to motivate the troops in the traditional Gandhi stronghold, Priyanka told reporters she would not contest the Lok Sabha elections, adding she was there to campaign for Rahul and Sonia “to spare them for electioneering in the rest of the country”.
Earlier, addressing a training camp at Gauriganj, Priyanka lashed out at those joining politics for money or power.
“They don’t get the same respect that is given to those serving the people,” she said. “We have tried to serve you and you have given us respect. Nobody can defeat your love for us. So we will win for sure.”
