A day after parting ways with the Congress and joining the SAD, Raja Malwinder Singh, brother of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Capt Amarinder Singh, campaigned in the Samana assembly segment against his nephew and Congress candidate Raninder Singh on Sunday. Malwinder took on his sister-in-law and minister of state for external affairs Preneet Kaur for opposing his candidature from Samana and “backstabbing” him by preferring Raninder over him.
“I served the party and worked for my family for 35 years without demanding anything. I have come to their aid whenever they needed me the most. They have meted out step-motherly treatment to me,” said Malwinder.
He asked people to vote in favour of SAD candidate Surjit Singh Rakhra to give a “befitting reply” to his sister-in-law for “playing spoilsport”. “Raninder was never a candidate desired by you or the PPCC. Vote for the SAD to convey to the Congress leaders that they have wronged me,” said Malwinder, who was accompanied by Rakhra, while addressing his supporters in Samana.
Malwinder has been active in Samana since 1977 and has remained incharge of polls in this segment till 2007.
“It’s you who have to choose your representative. It is up to you whether you want a kid (Raninder) or a mature leader like Rakhra, who is sure to become a minister when the SAD comes to power. Do not get influenced by the emotional speech of my sister-in-law, who wants to use your support to prop up her son,” said Malwinder. Trying to strike an emotional chord with his supporters, he said, “Raninder’s defeat would be an endorsement of my contribution to Samana.” Malwinder said that as instructed by chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, he would campaign in every assembly segment of Patiala district to ensure the defeat of the Congress. He also inaugurated the SAD election office in Samana.
Welcoming Malwinder to the party fold, Rakhra said Malwinder was the real leader of the Congress in Samana, where he had been active for over three decades. “If the Congress can ignore the services of such a senior leader, how can it safeguard the interests of voters?” he asked.
