A man was convicted of molesting a maid from India but cleared of two other molestation charges made by another Indian domestic worker here, news media said Friday.

Veloo Ganesan, 50, was convicted of grabbing the breast of the 27-year-old woman and using criminal force in molesting her.

The mother of two, who was not named, told the district court that Veloo molested her a week after she started work for his family in December 2004, The Straits Times reported.

Apparently, he would often appear from behind and lean against her.

When Veloo and his family went to Malaysia for a holiday, they sent the maid to stay with her agent. When they returned, the maid refused to continue working for Veloo, who faces a maximum three-and-a-half year jail term or a fine.

The hearing was adjourned to April 5.

The maid's replacement, a 32-year-old woman, also accused Veloo of molesting her, but he was acquitted.

The first maid, who is married, made a police report on Jan 24, 2005, four days after she left the household. However, there were inconsistencies in her police report compared to her testimony in court.
