Manipur IGP killed in ambush

Militants overtook the vehicle of the IGP (Intelligence) at Oinam area and sprayed bullets killing the IG and havildar on the spot.

Manipur Inspector General of Police (Intelligence) Tunglut Thangthaum, along with a havildar, was killed and two police personnel were injured in an ambush by militants in Bishenpur district on Saturday, official sources said.

Heavily armed militants in a truck overtook the vehicle of the IGP (Intelligence) at Oinam area, about 25 km from the state capital, and sprayed bullets killing Thangthuam and havildar Khamkhan Jam on the spot, the sources said.

Jam was the commander of the security personnel escorting the IGP (Intelligence).

Two policemen identified as Awat Bihari and Ginmang Paite were injured in the ambush.

The condition of the two was stated to be serious, the sources said.

Police and security personnel escorting the senior police official returned the fire and the exchange of fire lasted for sometime, the sources said.

The militants reportedly escaped in the truck towards Leimatak hill area.
