BPs are high here. BPs are low there and the bazaar of mannats is getting hotter every minute.

While some candidates have vowed to go for Vaishno Devi ‘darshan’, others have planned to perform ‘havan’, Ramayan ‘paath’, or ‘bhandara’ on winning.

Taking seven rounds of a the temple and a visit to the dargah of Ajmer Sharif or Khamman Peer in Lucknow was on the agenda of others.

What if they fail to fulfill their promise to God just as they forget to keep promises made to the voters?

“God will ensure the defeat of the candidate who ditches Him,” said Sayyed Yawar Hussain Reshu, a contestant from JC Bose ward. “I believe in fulfilling promises not only to God but to the public of my area too, who are also like God for a humble representative like me.

Usually people forget God in the daily life but these are some occasions when you require His support. As the results are on their way, I am praying to God for victory,” he added.

Former corporator Girish Mishra whose wife is contesting from Sardar Patel ward says, “Yes, I have made a pledge for the victory of my wife but I cannot disclose it—it is between me and God, a totally personal affair. But yes, regarding fulfillment of promises made to the voters, I can only say that we have not promised anything to the voters which we can’t do.

During my term, I have fulfilled all promises to the voters.”

Deepak, whose wife contested the elections, said he had pledged to visit temples of his ancestors in his village. “We would take seven rounds of temple barefoot,” said Deepak.
