The event is a part of series of activities planned by the institute to observe 2005-06 as its Golden Jubilee Year.

Addressing media persons on Saturday, convenor of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations Committee Prof Nar Singh informed that the AU Vice-Chancellor Prof RG Harshe will be the chief guest on the occasion while Prof KD Dikshit, an alumni of the first batch of the Institute, will preside over the function.

Prof Singh said that Dr Shamim Ahmad, Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard University, New Delhi and GP Srivastava, General Manager, ECIL (Hyderabad), who are both the alumni of the institute, will be the guests of honour.

"About 200 alumni will be felicitated during the function," he added.

"This institute came into existence with the efforts and blessings of Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. Pt Nehru was so deeply involved with this institute that he not only laid the foundation stone on January 14, 1949 but also inaugurated the first academic session on April 4, 1956," Prof Singh said.

Among the activities planned by the institute administrators to mark the historical event of its completing 50 years, include hosting an international conference on 'Next Generation Communication Systems' from December 9 to December 11, 2006.

"Felicitation of about 500 distinguished alumni of the institute will be done on the occasion. We will also host national-level academic, sports and cultural activities for the students from October 3, 2006 to October 12, 2006," he added.

Construction of a separate hostel for the students of the JK Institute has also been planned.

"Other initiatives include ensuring a cent per cent placement for our students through campus selection, institution of medals for rank holders and scholarship for needy and meritorious students. We have also decided to organise a Golden Jubilee Lecture Series by eminent experts besides publishing a souvenir of JK Alumni containing their detailed bio-data. Establishing a corpus fund to the tune of Rs 10 million for the growth of the Institute has also been agreed upon," Prof Singh said.

The JK Institute is one of the premier institutes in India in the field of Electronics and Communication Engineering and offers today BTech and MTech courses besides a MSc (Computer Science) course. The institute is even older than many of the IITs including IIT-Kanpur. Its alumni are not only well placed, but are also dominating their counterparts from other organisations including the IITs," he added.
