Maoists killed three brothers, including a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) district chief, on Friday in Dantewada district, about 450 km south of Raipur.
District Superintendent of Police Amresh Mishra said the armed rebels barged into RSS district leader Jai Singh’s house and hacked him, his brother Pileshwar Manjhi and nephew Lachindar to death in Kidrepal village.
They then dumped their bodies at the village square.
A group of about 50 Maoists attacked the three and slit their throat with sharp-edged weapons, the district superintendent of police said.
“We are exploring the reasons behind the killings,” Mishra said, adding that the rebels are trying to create an environment of terror among the villagers as the operation against them gains momentum.
Jai Singh was a block resource coordinator for Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan (total literacy campaign) while his brother was vice president of Janpad panchayat, said Mishra.
The police have launched a search operation in the area and more reinforcements were rushed in to hunt down the killers.
In another incident, a Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) cop Dhananjay Singh shot himself with his service weapon at Kanker district on Friday, about 200 km south of Raipur.
Kanker Superintendent of Police Ajay Yadav said the constable succumbed to his injury on the way to hospital.
