The Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday directed different agencies to jointly prepare a master plan for the integrated development of the Chilka lake, according to official sources.
The master plan should lay emphasis on protection of the brackish water lagoon's ecology, development of tourism, increase in production, social and economic development of people living on its periphery and safeguarding their traditions, Patnaik said while addressing the seventh meeting of the managing committee of the Chilka Development Authority here.
Patnaik instructed collectors of the districts of Puri, Khurda and Ganjam to initiate strong steps to demolish lucrative prawn gherries which had become the cause of frequent tension and clashes between different villages.
The meeting expressed happiness over the increase in fish and crab production in the lake following the opening of a new link canal between the lagoon and sea.
CDA representatives said that a four-year programme had been chalked out for the lake's development for which the eleventh finance commission had made a special allocation of Rs. 30 crore. The meeting decided to formulate a monthly programme for the purpose, the sources said.
