When Matt Sinclair was brought in to bat for New Zealand at the end of 1999, in the 2nd Test of the New Zealand versus West Indies series, he became an overnight sensation, scoring a well-earned 214 runs.

Sinclair's score equalled the highest total by a No.3 player on debut, set, ironically, by a West Indian, Lawrence Rowe, against New Zealand in Jamaica in 1972.
