Mega plan for 15 more IITs

To maintain a steady flow of the skilled workforce, the Planning Commission has recommended that more IITs be set up.

Commission’s Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said on Thursday, “We have to sustain the supply of skilled manpower. The government should focus on creating many more IITs.

May be we need at least three times more IITs than what we have now. Simply upgrading the existing ones won’t do.” Ahluwalia was speaking at the National Technology Day awards function.

He said the country has to rapidly expand the capacity to train the skilled workforce. “For India to be a global leader the dropout percentage has to go up from eight per cent to 20 per cent,” he added.
