This has reference to the report Delhi gives up, will ask SC for mercy (September 22). The only practical solution to the problem is to have traders’, residents’ and political parties’ representatives meet with the official nominees of the courts. These may be members of monitoring committees appointed by the Supreme Court. This matter involves indiscipline in public life on the one side, and livelihood of millions on the other. It cannot be resolved by routine court orders.

In calling the government’s efforts knee-jerk, the urban planners are being unfair to the government (Changing land use a knee-jerk reaction, say experts, September 23). If the courts had accepted the government’s decision to maintain the status quo for a year, a more scientific and planned approach could have been taken. The urgency shown by the government is in response to the desperation inflicted on the people by the courts.

Populism at work

After the violence, the government moved quickly and stopped the sealing drive, defying the court’s order. The same government has not given in after much protest all over India against the reservation issue. AIIMS doctors were denied their salary for days despite the court’s order, while in Seelampur, compensation was announced the same day.
This is just an example of populist governance and vote bank politics.

A garbage ground

Apropos of the report Dutch diplomat drops mask, curses Delhi (September 23), it may be a diplomatic faux pas, but to be honest, leaving aside Lutyens’ Delhi where our politicians live, the rest of Delhi really is a garbage dump. There are eyesores and open garbage dumps even in ‘posh’ areas like GK-I, and even in the inner circle of Connaught Circus. Each and every area where no VIP lives is filthy and stinking.
