Parents of the missing Japanese student, Kota Shinozaki, were in Delhi on Saturday. The 21-year-old had arrived in Delhi on September 3 and was last seen at the IGI airport where he exchanged $100 for Indian currency. His parents, along with the Embassy of Japan, have registered a complaint with Delhi Police.

Shinozaki, a student of economics, was on a vacation and was visiting India for the first time. The 21-year-old was scheduled to return to his country by September-end as he had an open return ticket that expired on October 2.

“According to his parents he did not mention to them the places in India he would be visiting. They also did not possess an itinerary of his trip. He did not get in touch with them either after landing in Delhi. We reported the matter officially to Indian authorities on October 17, said Ryuji Noda, First Secretary Embassy of Japan.

Noda added that his parents have been upset after the incident because Kota had always been a serious and responsible person.

On being asked if they had got any response from the Ministry of External Affairs, Noda said that MEA was under no obligation, as the matter has not been brought to their notice. “We only informed police about it,” added Noda.

When they did not hear from Shinozaki, his parents contacted the Foreign Ministry in Tokyo, which informed the Japanese Embassy in Delhi.
