MNNIT makes a foray into executives? training

FOLLOWING ON the footsteps of some of the other top technical institutes of the country, the Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT) is now all set to host its first-ever 'Executive Development Programme'.

Focusing on the 'Application of Optimisation Techniques in Manufacturing, Processing and Service Sectors', the three-day programme will kick off on April 20 and will mark yet another initiative of the Deemed University's to further broaden the spectrum of its educational activities and extend its technical expertise to various organs of the society.
"The use of optimisation techniques is a powerful means of determining optimal plans, schedules and timetables. The main objective of the programme is to offer a refresher and awareness course for middle and high level managers of industrial and service sectors who are required to take strategic and tactical decisions in executing their duties and can use optimisation techniques for decision making at their workplace," informed Prof Nirjhar Roy of MNNIT's Mechanical Engineering Department, who is also the co-ordinator of this programme.
He said that it is expected that after the programme the participants will initiate techniques and steps for efficient utilisation of resources at their respective firms and companies.
Prof Roy said that MNNIT has been constantly striving to expand its activities and the field of 'Executive Development Programmes' had somehow got neglected. "With this programme, we have filled that gap too and taken another step to take our technical expertise to the people," he added.
He said that during this programme, the participants are expected to acquire the expertise after attending the course to apply the modelling methodology and optimisation techniques to problem identification in manufacturing and service functions including budgeting and financial control activities. "The emphasis will be on modelling and the choice of appropriate optimisation methods in realistic industrial and business situations," he said.
Prof Roy informed that a few case studies would also be taken up as hands on practice and the participants will get opportunities to discuss about the optimisation theories in their work arena too. Among the main topics that will be taken up by eminent resource persons, who have been invited from top technical institutions of the country including the IITs, during the programme include: Non-linear and semi-definite programming techniques and their applications, Decision theory and decision tree, Pareto optimality and optimised curve fitting, Evolutionary optimisation theories and their applications in strategic decision making. Other issues also to be taken up are application of optimisation programming methods in business and other systems including production planning and control, budgetary control, Case studies from process, manufacturing and service sector industries and systems analysis and statistical tests for hypothesis.
"We are expecting participants from various industrial firms like the Reliance Industries, NTPC, AREVA, ITI (Naini) and BPCL. To ensure the quality and effectiveness of the programme we have decided to limit the number of participants to just 25," Prof Roy Added.
