The Corporation had sought offers from WAPCOS for providing technical assistance to the project for which the consultancy firm quoted a sum of nearly Rs 1 crore. Mayor Dr Uma Shashi Sharma has also asked the firm to carry out a feasibility study for the proposal to develop a bird sanctuary at Sirpur Lake.

During today’s meeting WAPCOS engineer A K Sinha is said to have stressed that the civic body make clear how it would generate the funds and announce a definite date for the consultancy payment before matters could proceed further.

Sinha, who along with WAPCOS hydraulic engineer R Yadav is in town to carry out an onsite inspection, also took up the matter at a meeting with Municipal Commissioner Vinod Sharma later in the day.

When contacted Sinha, however, downplayed the issue. “We did take up the matter of payments, but this was only one of the issues discussed at the meeting, which was largely taken up by technical aspects of the project.’’

City engineer (waterworks and drainage) G P Pathak, however, denied the reports. “The question of payments does not arise as WAPCOS is still in the process of carrying out an inspection. A final bid will be offered only after the reservoir inspection is complete,” he declared.
