It normally arrives in Kerala around June 1 and in the North-east on June 2 or 3.

"The monsoon arrived today in parts of the Northeast," a senior official at the Delhi-based India Meteorological Department said.

The official, who declined to be identified, reaffirmed the department's earlier forecast that the monsoon would arrive in Kerala between June 8 and 10, more than a week behind schedule.

"The Bay of Bengal branch of the monsoon, which brings rain to the Northeast, was more active this year than the Arabian Sea branch, which arrives in Kerala," said another weather official in Guwahati.
