Accepting BSNL’s long-pending demand, the Wireless Planning and Coordination Wing (WPC) has made available more frequency to the three cities to help the department expand and improve its service. While Lucknow has got 1.8 mega hertz of additional frequency, Kanpur and Varanasi have received 1.6 mega hertz and 1.4 mega hertz of additional frequency, respectively. Thus a total of 1.8 mega hertz of additional frequency has been added to the 6.2 mega hertz of existing frequency in the State Capital.

Availability of more frequency is expected to improve mobile services in around 16 localities, including Hazratganj, Aminabad and Indiranagar, where BTS, are overloaded leading to congestion, call drops and other network irritants.
General Manager (Mobile Services) AK Jain said that at present the distance between one BTS and another was 1,000 metres.

“But, now more frequency will enable us to install BTS at 500-metre distance.” He said the equipment for tuning the network in accordance with additional frequency had already been ordered from Sweden and was likely to be received the next month.
