“I have asked Commissioner Higher Education to inquire from the vice-chancellor of Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyala how permission was given for a political function of a particular party,” Education Minister Laxmikant Sharma told HT on Thursday.

Vice-chancellor Ajit S Sehrawat said, “Gandhi was invited because he is a youth icon” and that politicians were kept out of the function.

“Rahul Gandhi did not urge students to join the NSUI (National Students Union of India) or Congress,” state party spokesman Arvind Malviya said.
