It is not in the exempted category so far, government sources said adding it was a conscious decision not to keep the post in the exempted category with a view to avoid any opposition criticism in the matter.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi had been the NAC chairperson, a post from which she resigned on March 23 along with her Lok Sabha seat in the wake of the office-of-profit controversy.
The sources said right now the thinking is that no MP should head the NAC.
