Naxals have abducted a Major belonging to the Border Road Organisation of Army, engaged in laying road network in Naxal infested Gadhciroli district while he went to negotiate for the release of his supervisor, kidnapped earlier by the ultras, police said on Thursday.

Naxalites had on January 18 abducted one Unnikrishnan, a BRO supervisor from Asarali in Sironcha Taluka, and demanded Rs 2 lakh and release of two Naxalites from police custody, Gadchiroli SP Shirish Jain said on Thursday.

However, Unnikrishnan managed to escape from their clutches on Wednesday evening.

Unaware of Unnikrishan's escape, a senior BRO officer Major MM Swamy, went inside the thick jungles in south-eastern Vidarbha to hold talks with the Naxals seeking his supervisor's release, when the ultras abducted him, Jain added.

"No money was paid but Unnikrishnan managed to escape from their clutches", Jain asserted.

Efforts were on for safe release of Major Swamy, he added.
