Assam was calm for the second day on Friday with no fresh anti-Bihari violence erupting in the state, though stringent security measures were still in place particularly in view of ULFA observing the day as "black day".

Official sources here said, the government was taking no chances with its security arrangements as the proscribed outfit had a tendency to strike after a lull to catch the relaxed people and security personnel off guard.

Meanwhile, in worst-affected Tinsukia district, schools, colleges and other educational institutions were functioning normally since they reopened on Thursday with curfew relaxed for 12 hours from 6 am to 6 pm.

Curfew which continued in 11 other towns was also relaxed during the day as there was no fresh incident.

The ULFA observed the day as "black day" annually since 1990 when President's Rule was imposed in the state on November 28 and army operation "Bajrang" launched against the outfit.

Altogether 56 Biharis have lost their lives in the ongoing violence in the state following the attack on Assamese train passengers in Bihar.
