No longer smooth as silk

It is shocking to know about the appalling state that the Bhagalpur silk industry is in today (Bhagalpur silk losing out to Chinese look-alikes, Dying Craft, September 1). It is because of the government’s faulty foreign trade policy that has on the one hand opened the Indian market to foreign sellers, but on the other hand has done little to promote Indian artisans in other countries. The need of the hour is to modernise the Bhagalpur silk industry so that it can match global standards.
