Locals in the border village of Jeora Post blamed the authorities for not sounding an alarm despite heavy shelling in the past few days by Pakistan. The shelling led to the death of two people, while five others from the same family were seriously injured on Saturday."We were sleeping outside when a thundering explosion left my entire family hurt by heavy splinters. I saw my son and my grandchild lying motionless while my wife, my daughter-in-law and my two grandchildren were screaming in pain," Shahdin, the head of the family, told HT.
“Heavy firing from across (Pakistan) was being heard from past two days and since we were not sounded by the administration to evacuate the place, we stayed put,” said Shahdin.
Pakistan had resorted to heavy shelling of 82-mm mortars from Saturday midnight, resulting in the death of two civilians — Akram Hussain (27) and his son Aslam Hussain (8). In retaliation, the Border Security Force (BSF) responded with equal firepower, which resulted in heavy exchange of artillery till 7 am on Saturday.
This was heaviest unprovoked and indiscriminate firing and shelling by Pakistan this year, in violation of the 2003 ceasefire agreement. “We plead to the government to take away all of our livestock which is the source of our livelihood and provide our men and children with the job so that we can move to safer places rather than risking our lives on the borders,” said Airaan Bibi, 75, who said she had been witness to frequent aggression by Pakistan over her 35 years stay at the Jeora post.
There have been over 16 ceasefire violations in the past ten days along the border by Pakistani troops and a total of 18 this month.
