No peg to stand on

Anna Hazare wants to flog people who drink. So shall we shut the bar to raise the bar?

Anna Hazare appears have concocted a cocktail of problems comprising graft, alcohol and other issues relating to moral turpitude. Oh dear, did we say cocktail? This could mean fifty lashes for us. Now that Anna's cup of support is overflowing, he is preparing the new 10 commandments by which we must live, and we do hope he does not mind the word cup, we have to rethink our lives. The one which has struck terror in the hearts of most of us sinners is his decree that drinkers must be flogged if they do not give up their evening tipple. In fact, he himself, being a man of his word, had once flogged three hapless drunks with his army belt.

So those among us given to a drop must now think twice before racing around Jantar Mantar saying we are Anna. Clearly, we are made of much more mundane stuff than the morally superior personage from Ralegan Siddhi. Our fear is that Anna and his merry band, and we mean do not mean merry in the sense we are after a visit to the Press Club, may extend the number of evils we must shun in order to become an Ideal Society. Perhaps infidelity could be one. So if you were thinking of a bit of action on the side, Anna's lads and ladies may be watching you. Or if you are in the habit of smoking, you may find your aspirations quickly extinguished by them. It could be that Kiran Bedi, Arvind Kejriwal and their ilk have expanded the meaning of corruption to mean anything that corrupts both morally and materially.

Anna is a simple soul, we are told, he sees things in black and white. This is cold comfort to us for we see things in technicolour especially when we have thrown a few down the hatch. Will we shut the bar to raise the bar? Unlikely, and we'll drink to that if the Anna Gang will let us.
