Investigators conveyed to the family on Monday that the murder appeared more to be part of a series of attacks in which victims were stabbed prior to being looted.
Investigators said a knife was used on Nitin to prevent “anticipated resistance” during the attempted loot.
“They (Australian police) told us the murder matched similar incidents in which a knife was used to injure immigrants as well as locals to rob them,” said a Melbourne-based friend of the Garg family, Aman Dhillon. Nitin’s friends in Melbourne said Nitin’s life could have been saved if he had agreed to take a lift with them to the restaurant where he worked. “But he insisted on taking as shortcut through a park,” said Sandeep Singh, a friend.
