It is not surprising that members of the US Congress have united on the matter of civilian nuclear cooperation with India (Nuke bill passage on course, June 28). Both Republicans and Democrats are looking at securing the interests of the US. The US also wants a base in India in case of future tension with China. So it is a matter of ‘give and take’.

Check fuel prices

The government should control the prices of petrol and diesel to check the steep hike in prices of essential commodities like vegetables, fruits and pulses. A long-term strategy could be to encourage the use of CNG and other alternative fuels.

Under the hammer

The DDA’s anti-people decision to auction MIG and HIG flats will take these beyond the reach of the common man. It should reverse its decision and offer the flats through draws. Delhi is, in any case, a haven for the rich and the auction will be a platform for them to display their money power.

II

The DDA’s decision to auction school sites and flats will make education and housing costlier. The DDA will reap big benefits by auctioning land that it procured from farmers for very little. It must not behave like private builders.

Buffett lessons

Hats off to Warren Buffett who has donated $ 37 billion (Buffett billions for charity, June 27). Our politicians, who hoard millions illegally, could learn from this.
