Officer tried to fix review
Jessica Lall's sister has claimed that Amod Kanth asked her to request Paul to retain the old team for reinvestigation.india Updated: Apr 05, 2006 01:36 IST
Sabrina lall has claimed that last month Amod Kanth, the man who supervised the probe into the murder of her sister Jessica Lall in 1999, asked her to request the police commissioner to retain the team which had investigated the case -- if a reinvestigation was ordered.
Sabrina told HT that Kanth had called her on March 2 and asked her if is she could meet him. Sabrina and a friend of hers went to Kanth's residence that afternoon.
Joint commissioner (southern range) at the time of Jessica's murder, Kanth is currently posted as DG, Arunachal Pradesh. He was in Delhi in the first week of March.
"Saying he wanted to give a piece of advice, Kanth told me I should impress upon the commissioner, K.K. Paul, that he should include inspector Surender Sharma, then additional DCP (south) Vivek Gogia and then DCP Sudhir Yadav in the police team if the case was to be investigated again," said Sabrina.
At that time, neither had a new FIR been registered in the Jessica case nor a new investigation ordered. "I was completely shocked when Kanth said this to me," said Sabrina. "How on earth could he say such a thing to me? These are the same officers who botched up the investigations and he wanted them to be a part of any new team that would be formed to investigate the loopholes in the investigation."
Sabrina was told to mention this to Paul as the "commissioner would listen to me". "He also asked me not to mention his name to Paul," said Sabrina. "When I told Paul about this, he expressed surprise."
Paul confirmed that Sabrina had told her about her meeting with Kanth. "She had conveyed this to me," he said.
Sabrina lall has alleged that it were the police officers who took Jessica's body to AIIMS who should be held responsible for her missing clothes. The clothes worn by Jessica on the day of the incident were never recovered. Also the bedsheet in which her body had been wrapped and taken to hospital had gone missing under mysterious circumstances.
On Bina Ramani asking her to forget about the case as powerful people were involved, Sabrina said, ''It's true she had initially said so but that was just hours after the incident. I don't know if it was well-meaning or not.''
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Tuesday questioned socialite Bina Ramani on several issues relating to the Jessica Lall case.
"We had asked her to give replies to some questions which has done today. We hope she has given the right answers," said U. K. Katna, the SIT chief.
Katna said that so far 24 people including police officers who had visited the spot and later arrested the accused have been questioned in the case. He also said that model Shayan Munshi, who retracted his statement in the court, has been asked to join the investigations in the capital.
Bina was given a detailed questionnaire by the SIT. She was also asked to provide a list of employees who were present at the time of the incident, the officer said. Sources said that Bina was reportedly questioned as to why she had instructed her men to clean the bloodstains from the crime spot. Bina has just returned to Delhi after attending her niece's wedding in Phuket. The High Court had given Bina permission on the condition that she would be joining the investigations immediately after her arrival.
