This situation has risen following the success of 90 per cent students in Allahabad district in the UP Board examinations.

As many as 73,000 out of 80,000 students in the district have been declared to have passed the Intermediate examination-2006 of UP Board.

This number is likely touch one lakh mark after the declaration of class XII examination results of Central Board of Secondary Education. Providing admission to one lakh students in the universities and degree colleges in the district is the biggest challenge for the Central as well as the State Governments.

The situation has turned grim since Allahabad University has reduced nearly 3000 seats in undergraduate classes after being granted the status of Central University. As per sources, nearly ten thousands seats had been reduced by AU and other affiliated colleges this year to adhere to the norms of the University Grants Commission. Even in correspondence courses the seats have been fixed from the coming academic year.

Sources said the total undergraduate admission capacity in the city is nearly 22,000 seats. Therefore, remaining 80,000 students who have passed 12th this year from different boards have to face a serious problem in getting admission in universities and degree colleges in the city.

To recall as many as 89 per cent students were declared successful in the Intermediate examination -2006 as announced by Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad here on Sunday.

The board officers had patted each others' back for declaring result on time and with good pass percentage. But this good result has posed several challenges before the authorities handling the higher education.
