The revelation came at a programme in Pune on Friday. “In the Purti matter, it was Sharad Pawar who backed me,” he said.

“The Income Tax commissioner met me few days ago and apologised ... He told me that the people who visited my offices were not really I-T sleuths,” he added. Hinting at a conspiracy by “certain people from Delhi”, Gadkari said, “I don’t want to name them at this moment”.

Earlier this year, the alleged business irregularities of the Purti Group had cost Gadkari his second term as BJP chief.
