The Panathinaiko stadium was formerly known as the “Kalimarmaro” (exquisite marble) or the “Panathenian” stadium which has a historical significance attached to it. The marble clad stadium or the Panthinaiko was reconstructed in 1895 to host the first modern Olympics in the following year.

The stadium has been renovated and lights have been installed to suit the modern needs of the game. Test events in archery were successfully conducted at the stadium in August 2003.

At the 2004 Games the Panathenian will accommodate 45,000 spectators for the Marathon and around 5,500 for the Archery event.
