Police said the residents had also staged a fast near the Satchiapuram bus stop on March 31 to protest against the construction. On that day, some miscreants had damaged some electrical equipment at the mill over which cases were registered, they said.

Meanwhile some unidentified persons entered the factory premises early Friday morning and set ablaze the generator room and store room.

The Superintendent of Police Krishnamurthy who visited the site, said village elders had told him that the groundwater table would be depleted if the mill came up and that the factory would let out toxic fumes. He told them that their concerns would be conveyed to the authorities concerned.
