People’s mandate

The Assembly elections to five states have shown that the Congress-led coalition is, for the time being, governing the country to the likes of people. The NDA has been marginalised in these polls and will have to work very hard to recuperate. The voter has shown that he cannot be fooled into getting involved in issues concerning religion. But the victor still needs to consolidate its position for the future.

Think before you leap

Vikram Sood’s article Height of folly (May 11) not only conveys a sound warning but also contains a sane message for all those negotiating with Pakistan over Kashmir. India certainly should not try to please the international community at its own disadvantage.

Pandits ignored

By terming the killing of two innocent Hindus in Vadodara as ‘retaliatory’ action, Harsh Mander almost justifies the prior action of burning alive a Muslim driver (Rubble-rousers, May 8). One also wishes Mander had taken note of the massacre of 35 Hindus in J&K. This issue has been given scant attention by the media. One must not forget that even today, Kashmiri Pandits live in oblivion.

Groom him

Barkha Dutt’s article Running to a better life (May 10) offered an interesting insight, that had it not been for this sprint, Budhia would have remained a poverty statistic. The government should allow him to live with his foster father who recognised his talent. The authorities should provide him with healthcare and groom his talent. This race can become a blessing in disguise for him.

What a relief

The Delhi High Court’s order to restrict private schools from conducting interviews of children and parents for admission to nursery classes is an excellent step (No interviews, May 11). The interview process is a torture for children. Parents, too, must be relieved. Thanks to the court for its wise decision.
