Petro price hike: BJP activists court arrest

While Apna Dal and Janata Dal (United) activists staged separate demonstrations, the BJP activists, who were 219 in number, the police said, staged a demonstration and courted arrest.

While Apna Dal and Janata Dal (United) activists staged separate demonstrations, the BJP activists, who were 219 in number, the police said, staged a demonstration and courted arrest. They were later released.

The BJP leaders flayed the Union Government for increasing prices of petrol and diesel. They said the price hike in petro products had compounded the miseries of the people. They alleged as it is, costs of essential commodities were skyrocketing and the recent petro price hike had compounded the problem.

Local BJP leaders including former member of Parliament Shankar Prasad Jaiswal, Laxman Acharya, Sujit Tikka and Sudhir Dubey said the Congress led UPA Government was not paying attention to uplift the status of the common people.

Meanwhile, Apana Dal and JD (U) activists staged a demonstration at district headquarters against the price hike and establishment of the proposed high-tech city in Varanasi.

Speaking as chief guest on the occasion, Apna Dal leader Athar Jamal Lari flayed the Union Government for price hike and demanded from it to roll back the hike.

He said the poor were the worst sufferers as prices of transportation and other essential goods had also shot up.

He criticised the State Government for proposing to set-up a high-tech city between Rohania and Mohansarai.. He said villagers would be displaced due to this and, therefore, his party would never allow the government to acquire land for this project.

Prominent among those who participated were Rajesh Patel, Onkar Patel, Akshayawar Patel, district president of JD (U) Vishnu Yadav and Haridwar Yadav.
