AN ELABORATE security cover has been cast on the State capital on the eve of Republic Day and all important installations are under round- the- clock surveillance.
While security has been tightened around the Lal Parade Ground, which is the venue of the main Republic Day function, the PHQ has been almost fortified this year. This is a bit surprising because there is apparently no specific threat perception to the PHQ. Officers admit that the security has been increased recently but dismiss any security threat.
ADG SK Raut said that there was no threat and routinely such measures are taken to upgrade security. Though other sensitive buildings are also under protection, unprecedented safety measures have been taken at the PHQ. Several check posts have been put in place and armed gunmen deployed at the bunkers that have been formed inside the campus.
This is for the first time that such an elaborate arrangement has been undertaken at the PHQ. Meanwhile, over a 1,500 policemen will oversee security on the Republic Day. The personnel of Special Task Force, Delta Force, Special Armed Force and district police are pressed into service.
