If you can afford gold, platinum’s not unreachable. The young and the hip in Mumbai seem to have stumbled upon this fact.

“Platinum pricing is now within a 25 per cent higher range as compared with gold. It’s a rare and aspirational metal, and is now more affordable not just in comparison but also because the slowdown has led to a price correction,” said Vijay Jain, CEO of Aura, which deals in platinum jewellery. Platinum costs around Rs 17,000 per 10 gm.

Rekha Radhakrishnan, a 24-year-old HR professional, is a convert. “I recently got engaged and gave my fiancé a platinum ring. It’s more modern and less flashy than gold,” she said.
