Pooh-poohing the police claim, they said Dilip was a healthy man and had not even taken a single pill for any ailment before he was picked up and beaten black and blue by the Kareilly station officer and his men. He had no history of kidney problem, they claimed. Policemen had picked him up and his family members for getting information about whereabouts of two persons who had set on fire five members of a family recently in Sadiyabad locality. Dilip was a kin of the perpetrators of the crime.
Rajkumar, the deceased’s brother said he was the first taken to the Kareilly police station on January 5. After this, policemen took him to Kanpur to locate the alleged killers, but failed. As a result he was brought back to the Kareilly police station on January 7.
Here, he saw his brother’s wife Jeera Devi and her second son. Both, were thrashed by cops in his presence, alleged Rajkumar. After this, Dilip was taken to the police station and allegedly beaten. He vomited blood and even passed blood in urine, alleged Rajkumar who was let off by the cops after he allegedly agreed to pay a sum of Rs 30, 000.
Dilip was freed by the cops on January 8, but when his condition deteriorated, he was first taken to a local doctor who advised the family to take him to a nursing home where he succumbed to his injuries.
After reading the police version in newspapers on Thursday, the residents of the area have decided to teach a lesson to the police.
“We shall fight for justice,” said a resident.
It was a clear case of murder of a man by the men in uniform who were supposed to protect lives and property of citizens, said another resident.
