Armed militants shot and killed a policeman from a point-blank range on Sunday morning in north Kashmir’s Sopore area.
Around 9:50am, the militants carrying a pistol fired at the special police officer (SPO) in Ontoo Hamam village of Sopore, 55 km north of Srinagar. The policeman is a resident of Sopore’s Chanekhun locality.
“The policeman died on the spot. He had sustained more than one bullet injuries and succumbed immediately after the attack,” said a police officer.
The slain policeman, who was posted with the police station Sopore, has been identified as Mudasir Ahmad.

“We are investigating the matter. We have launched a manhunt to nab the culprits,” said a police official on the condition of anonymity.
Sunday’s incident has come just two days after a sarpanch was fired at by militants and left critically injured in Sopore’s Krankshivan area, when he was coming out of a mosque after offering Friday prayers.
On July 13, a head constable’s throat was slit by suspected militants in the forest area of Hangalpora, in Handwara, which is adjacent to Sopore. The cop had come on holidays.
