Premchand?s works need exploration

PADAMVIBHUSAN AWARDEE, Rajya Sabha member and renowned art movie director Shyam Benegal said there was need for more exploration on the works of Munshi Premchand through the medium of movies.
He was speaking as the chief guest at a function, organised here in Varanasi on Monday to celebrate the 126th birth anniversary of the great novelist and storywriter of Hindi literature Munshi Premchand.
Addressing young theater artists, Benegal said that Munshi Premchand gave a new dimension to the art of story and novel writing. Munshi Premchand has initiated the art of modern writing, he said.
Munshi Premchand was not only writer of Varanasi or India but he was a writer of international level, he added.
Benegal said Indians should not feel inferior, as there was a lot of treasure, which needed to be preserved.
The renowned art movie director also compared theatre art with movies. He said that success of theatre was totally dependant on the performance of the actor whereas in movies, there was need of better coordination between the director and artist.
“Artistes can get perfection through performance in theatres,” he said.
Shyam Benegal also exhorted the young theatre artists to work hard and get inspiration from renowned actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Ompuri etc.
Noted scriptwriter Atul Tiwari, who has written scripts of ‘Mission Kashmir’, ‘Dharavi’, ‘Ye Wo Manzil To Nahi’, also spoke on the occasion. Renowned thinker Bhanushankar Mehta presided over the function while Rati Shankar Tripathi coordinated of function.
Earlier, speaking at a swearing-in ceremony of Rotary Club, Benaras, on Sunday evening, Shyam Benegal termed Varanasi city as a ‘wonderful city’ and compared it with the photogenic face of Madhuri Dixit.
Benegal was of the view that ghats of along the Ganga were alive in Varanasi.
