A PRISONER fled from the district jail farm in Chaukaghat area on Wednesday. A jail guard sustained a minor injury in an attempt to nab the fleeing inmate.  The police have launched a manhunt for the prisoner at railway, bus stations and other places in the city.

Officiating district magistrate Jag Prasad said a magisterial inquiry would be ordered into the incident. The prisoner was identified as Gappu Lal (26), resident of Chaukaghat area, under Chetganj police station.

A group of 17 prisoners was taken to the farm from their barracks around 10 am on Wednesday.

Four jail guards Lalji Yadav, Munna Ram, Rajendra Prasad and Ashok Kumar were watching them. In the meantime, Gappu scaled the boundary wall and fled.

Police are questioning the four jail guards, who were entrusted with the responsibility of keeping watch on the group of 17 prisoners. Jailer Sohan Lal Gupta has brought the matter to the notice of the IG and the DIG, Prisons.

The police had caught Gappu without a ticket at the Varanasi Cantonment railway station recently. He was lodged in the district jail under section 147 on July 23. Those inmates, who are not accused of heinous crimes, are sent to the jail farm.

The boundary wall of the farm is just five feet high.  The busy Chaukaghat- Pandeypur road is adjacent to the boundary wall.  Many senior officials inspected the jail premises from time to time, but none of them recommended raising the boundary wall of the farm.
