Protests in Srinagar for second day; no casualties

The situation in Maisuma locality of the city, which witnessed fierce clashes between protesters and law enforcing agencies during a separatist-sponsored strike on Saturday, continued to be tense as residents staged a protest for the second successive day against the alleged highhandedness of police.

Residents of the area took to streets on Sunday demanding release of seven persons arrested by police on Saturday.

A brief clash between the protesters and police took place but there was no report of any casualty.

Police confirmed arrest of seven persons from the area saying they were involved in hurling stones at the police and public property.

Shops and business establishments remained closed in Maisuma, Madina Chowk, Red cross road, Basantbagh, Koker bazar, Lal Chowk and parts of residency road as a mark of protest.

At least 30 persons including 11 policemen were injured and a shopping complex was gutted during the day-long clashes yesterday.

Meanwhile, the condition of 14-year-old Faizan Ahmad who was hit by a bullet in the abdomen at Maisuma, the heart of the city yesterday, was stated to be out of danger, official sources said.

The chairman of hardline faction of Hurriyat Syed Ali Shah Geelani had given a call for strike yesterday against the alleged illegal occupation of land by troops in the state.

Geelani, who was detained on Saturday, was later let off last night, police said.
