In a major breakthrough, the Punjab police on Friday claimed to have foiled an attempt of some terrorist groups to reorganise their base and create terror in Punjab by killing some religious and political leaders of high importance.

The revival of terrorism was checked with the arrest of two persons, including general secretary of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) youth wing’s Rupnagar district Swaranjeet Singh alias Bobby of Bahadarpur in Rupnagar and a late Bhindrawale Tigers Force (BTF) ultra Sangat Singh Bawani’s son Gurcharan Singh alias Kala of Bawani village in Rupnagar.

Both Bobby and Kala had planned to assassinate a controversial religious leader Baba Piara Singh Bhaniarawale and to achieve this plan, they had formed Khalsa Action Committee, in which they were recruiting the like-minded persons.

A .455 bore US-made 1950-model sophisticated pistol, a .30 bore revolver, its 5 live cartridges and 2 live grenades were recovered from the duo, who were still on the job to acquire more sophisticated weapons to achieve their aim of Bhaniarawale’s assassination, disclosed S.A.S. Nagar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ranbir Singh Khatra at a press conference here this morning.

While the duo had confessed to their Bhaniarawale’s assassination plan, which they had committed to materialize even on the cost of their lives, the Punjab police and the Intelligence agencies had inputs that another religious leader Ashutosh besides some other political leaders were also on the hit list.

Divulging their reorganization and terror plans, the SSP told that both Bobby and Kala had met in Nabha high-security jail where they were lodged under rape and attempt to murder cases, respectively.

Being residents of the same district, both Bobby and Kala developed good relations in the jail, where they also came in contact with former terrorists Daljit Singh Bittu, Balbir Singh Beera and Gursharan Singh Gama, who were also lodged there.

Khatra said when Kala told Bittu that he was late ultra’s son, Bittu advised him and Bobby to get away from petty crimes and do something “good” for the Sikh community. Bittu also started bearing their expenses and inspired Kala to grow his hair and beard.

During their stay in jail, Kala and Bobby hatched a conspiracy to assassinate Bhaniarawale and swore to even give away their lives for achieving their plan.

To help in their designs, Beera, who was Bawani’s close associate, revealed them the places in Rupnagar district, where Bawani’s arms and ammunitions were hidden.

While Bobby was released on bail over a year back, Kala was bailed out over two months back. On meeting outside jail, they started working on their Bhaniarawale’s assassination plan, on which Bobby told Kala that Bhaniarawale’s security cover has been strengthened, following which sophisticated arms and ammunitions were required to kill him.

After recovering Bawani’s hidden arms and ammunitions, they planned to snatch the arms of the Punjab Home Guard personnel on guard at Lakhmipur-Jhallian siphon of Bhakra canal near Rupnagar, in which they had not yet succeeded, the SSP divulged.

Simultaneously, they decided to purchase new arms and ammunitions, for which they planned to grab money.

Under this plan, Kala and his accomplices tried to snatch a cash bag of a trader in Kurali on June 6, when Kala was held and during his sustained interrogation, he spilled the beans and helped the police to lay hands on Bobby as well, revealed the SSP.
