Raipur, the nerve centre of politics in the Chhattisgarh region, was once considered to be Congress stronghold till it fell to the Opposition for the first time during the Janata wave in 1977.

The BSP is a force to be reckoned with because of its vote-base among the Satnami community and its candidates in the last two elections has managed to get a large number of votes.

The seat is represented by BJP strongman Brijmohan Agrawal, who will seek re-election for the forth time in succession. Agrawal, a senior and vocal BJP leader had been trouble following his role during the state party elections incurring the wrath of elder BJP leaders. He however, seems to have sorted out the differences with the party.

Besides, Satnamis, Scheduled Castes constitute 16 per cent of the population while Muslims constitute two per cent population. Telis for a siezable 10 per cent while Ahirs 15 per cent of the total population. Kewats, Kurmis and Malis represent five per cent each of the population.
