The autopsy report on Ram Singh said the main accused in Delhi gangrape died of asphyxia due to hanging and sought to dispel the foul play angle by saying the death “appeared suicidal in nature”.
A board of five forensic experts that performed the autopsy at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Tuesday morning said the time of death could have been between 3.30am and 4.30am on Monday. Singh was found hanging in his cell in Tihar Jail at around 5.30am.
On Tuesday, the Tihar authorities put the four other accused — Singh’s brother Mukesh, Vinay Gupta, Pawan Sharma and Akshay Thakur — under round-the-clock electronic surveillance as a precautionary measure.
Singh, who was one of the six men who raped and brutalised the 23-year-old woman on a moving bus on December 16, was a man of average built -- weighing about 70kg with a height of 5 feet and 7 inches.
One of the doctors, who performed the autopsy, said, “There was heavy constriction around his neck that could mean the neck had taken almost the entire body weight.” The report said 33-year-old Singh had died of asphyxia caused due to the constriction.
Noting that there were no other external injury mark on his body, the doctors ruled out any possibility of Singh’s body having been hanged after murder. “It does not appear to be true in his case.”
Following the National Human Right Commission guidelines, the autopsy was conducted in-camera to ensure transparency. The report was dispatched from AIIMS in the evening.
Earlier, Singh's father Mange Lal and mother Rama Bai claimed that there were external injury marks on his throat. But the doctor said that was not unusual in cases of death due to hanging. “If the force is so great as to kill a person, it is bound to leave marks on the neck.”
The body of Singh was kept in AIIMS mortuary overnight as the autopsy could not be performed on Monday as completion of paperwork took time. Later, the body was taken to Singh’s ancestral home in Rajasthan's Karauli village.
Earlier, the Singhs’ neighbours at RK Puram's Ravi Dass slum cluster warned against bringing the body to their locality. “We had already made our wish clear to them soon after they returned from Tihar jail after Ram Singh’s suicide last afternoon,” said Rahul, a local resident.
