Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss has disagreed with the UN report which claimed that an estimated 5.7 million people in India were infected by the HIV virus till 2005.

"I am surprised by the UNAIDS report. I totally disagree with it," he said at a function to mark the 'World No Tobacco Day'.

The specialised UN agency had said on Tuesday said that the Indian subcontinent was a major area of concern in the global AIDS epidemic, with India alone accounting for two-thirds of HIV cases in the whole of Asia.

The world's second-most populous nation has overtaken South Africa as the country with the highest number of people living with the HIV virus, it said.
