Days after Ramdev was banned from campaigning for the BJP in Lucknow — following his hate speech against Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi — his yoga camp in Amethi was banned as well.
The district administration’s order banning the camp had been challenged in Allahabad high court, but on Tuesday, the court dismissed the petition.
Confirming the court order, district magistrate Amethi Jagatraj Tripathi said Ramdev had held the yoga camps at Lucknow and Fatehpur earlier, but he had been using such forums for political purposes. Besides, “the language used at these programmes was objectionable and could create divide in the society,” Tripathi said.
Ramdev had been fighting charges that his camps had become an occasion for canvassing votes for the BJP. Last week, he got a reprieve from the Gujarat high court, receiving permission to hold yoga camps in Ahmedabad and Vadodara.
But his Friday’s comment about Gandhi visiting Dalit homes for “picnics and honeymoon” queered the pitch. The remarks drew sharp criticism across the board and he was booked under the SC/ST Act. Despite his apology, there is a growing clamour for his arrest and Dalits in UP and Rajasthan have been holding regular protests against him.
