Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday said the trends emerging from the first phase of polling showed an overwhelming desire for change in the state.
"People are participating in this election to write a new script in the state's political history," Mehbooba said while addressing a series of election rallies in Langate assembly segment in north Kashmir.
Mehbooba said the PDP was clearly emerging as the foremost choice of voters in the state. She said it was heartening to note that people are braving all odds to participate in the electoral process not only to vote out the "anarchist NC-Congress coalition regime", but also to keep divisive forces at bay.
"While PDP has undoubtedly emerged as the first choice of the masses, it is to be seen how strong and decisive mandate people are going to hand over to their party to decisively address the challenges confronting the state," Mehbooba said.
Mehbooba added that the PDP has emerged as the only credible political force in the state to take head-on the emerging challenges posed by different forces.
She thanked the people for having reposed their trust in the democratic process and constitutional methods of finding a resolution to the Kashmir issue and the issues of Jammu and Kashmir.
"We are grateful to them and I pray to God that we are able to discharge our duty towards them to the best of our ability," Mehbooba said.
She said PDP has been able to inspire confidence among a majority of the people in all the regions of the state about its ability to solve the problems faced by the state on political, economic, administrative and financial fronts.
The PDP leader also thanked the election commission and the state administration for the smooth conduct of polls in the first phase.
